We have produced books, cassettes and VCD's about the arts of East Java. Currently available we have:

Books

  • "Wayang Topeng Malangan" (Malang Mask Dance) by Henri Supriyanto & M. Soleh Adi Pramono, produced by the Mangun Dharma Art Center, 1997: Written in Indonesian, this book gives a detailed history of Malang masked dance as well as transcriptions of the most popular Panji stories.

VCD's

  • "Tari Malangan" (Malang style dance) with Beskalan Putri, Beskalan Lanang, Srimpi Limo, Cucuk Ijo: There are four dances on this VCD, three of which are traditional Malang style dances and the fourth a commissioned work in the Malang style. The music is as wonderful as the dancing.
  • "Wayang Topeng Malangan" (Malang Mask dance): This is a one-hour version of a modern Malang-style mask dance drama called Panji-Reni. The dialogue is in Javanese by dhalang Ki M. Soleh Adi Pramono, singing by Karen Elizabeth Sekararum. The dances are a combination of traditional and modern.
  • "Ludruk" (together with Jayabaya)

Cassettes

  • "Yeg Oyeg": This cassette was originally produced as rehearsal material for the dances recorded here: Yeg Oyeg, Manggala and Wulanjar are all choreographed by M. Soleh Adi Pramono. Bapang, Klono and Gunungsari are traditional dances in the Malang style.
  • "Jaranan": Jaran Kepang or Kuda Lumping, or Horse Trance Dancing is one of the most popular art forms around these days. The music is very dynamic and varied between angklung, bamboo shakers, and gamelan music. Originally recorded as dance accompaniment, the music is unique in itself.
  • "Tari Malangan I": Four Malang style dances are recorded on this cassette, Beskalan Putri, Beskalan Laki, Srimpi Limo and Cucak Ijo. See VCD details.
  • "Musik & Tari Malangan": A number of dances are recorded here, all recent choreographies by Malang artists, as well as compositions by Malang composer Sumantri. The dances include Condromowo, Tandhakan and Genitri.

Wayang Shaddow Puppets

We have complete sets of wayang kulit puppet, around 150 different puppets each in the East Javanese set and the Central Javanese set. If you have some knowledge of Javanese shadow puppets you can order them by name, or if you'd like a certain type of character we can select the wayang puppet we think would be most appropriate for you. People often give a pair as a wedding gift or as a housewarming present. A number of wayang puppets represent what is considered 'good', like "Janaka" and "Gatutkaca", members of the "Pandhawa" five from the "Mahabarata", and we often provide such puppets to enthousiasts. But there are some 'rougher' wayang that are also a lot of fun!
