Mas Sigit Suseno is a batik maker and instructor. He is an independent artist and comes to the Mangun Dharma Art Center to give batik courses or produce batik for special occasions. Despite his youth he is considered one of the best traditional batik makers in the area. Students and locals alike are captivated by his enthusiasm for old and new patterns, colors and materials. "We have batik-making in my family back to my great-great grandfather. I often dream about batik motifs, and in my dreams I've asked my grandfather for batik cloths. I have a degree in economy and I went to Bali looking for work, but nothing was as satisfying to me as producing batik. I prefer to work with natural dyes rather than the naphtols (synthetics), because the natural dyes are so labor intensive and involved. When you work with naphthol colors, when you want a red you just dye the cloth red, but when you work with natural dyes the process to make a red is very long and involved and in the end much more satisfying. I've also been trying to find as many old batik motifs as I can, and I try to master all the motifs that I do find. I want to preserve as much of the old batik traditions as I can." |
